Potential Effects of Wild Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum L.) Seed Extract Intervention on Oxidative Stress Induced by Busulfan Drug in Different Organs of Rats

Chemotherapeutic agent, busulfan, induce oxidative stress as a mechanism to kill cancer cells, however, it may also cause in non-target tissues and thereby lead normal tissue injury. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum L.) has been used for centuries herbal drug. The present study was carried out investigate the potential effects of wild Silybum seed ethanol extract (SMSEE) intervention on induced by busulfan drug different organs Rats. For 42 rats were prepared fed with special ration, then they divided 7 groups 6 each group: group 1, Normal control: healthy without intervention; 2.control SMSEE, 400 mg/kg/day SMSEE; 3, positive control received 20 4, treated + 200 5, busulfan+ 6, 600 7, 800 SMSEE. amount parameters (ROS MDA), glutathione fractions (GSH GSSG), antioxidant enzymes (GSH-Px, GSH-Rd, SOD CAT) extracts (liver, kidneys, heart, spleen, pancreas testes) measured. results this showed that after treatment levels ROS MDA significantly (p≤0.05) increased GSH, GSSG, GSH-Px, CAT decreased all studied organs. Treatment administration SMSEE leads opposite direction rates. In conclusion, use had an preventive role through decreasing lipid peroxidation, improvement defense system. These provide basis promising tools future many important nutritional therapeutic applications.
